Thailand & Laos – two of Southeast Asia's most enchanting destinations. They combine both vibrant Bangkok, with hill tribes in the mountainous northeast of Thailand, and the languid pace of neighboring Laos. In both, we'll visit villages and ethnic groups creating crafts, including textiles, wood carving, paper making and others, each in their own style, as they have done for centuries.
Thailand is well-known to the well-traveled. Exciting Bangkok, gorgeous islands with diving and rafting, elephant camps... the country is filled with possibilities, whatever your interests. Bangkok is where our trip begins, with visits to the Royal Palace, Emerald Buddha and Jim Thompson House to whet your appetite. We fly to northeast Chiang Rai to visit the Opium Museum, hill tribes and more before crossing the border to Laos and our day cruise along the Mekong. Days are filled with workshops, drives through gorgeous and varied landscapes for village visits, special meals and meetings with local dignitaries and artisans.
Laos is still an unknown – and therefore undiscovered – destination for many travelers, but soon to be at the top of places to go; we highly suggest you come before it is discovered! From its UNESCO World Heritage Site of Luang Prabang, filled with wats, lantern-lit streets, Indochinese architecture, saffron-robed monks, to the capital of Vientiane, with many traces of its past French occupation, you will be captivated. With 68 ethnic tribes in villages deep in the countrysides and along the mighty Mekong, you'll see and experience ancient cultures still pursuing their craft and agricultural heritage – a rare opportunity in today's rapidly changing world.
Optional walks, hikes, biking and kayaking can be arranged as alternative activities on certain days.
