Peru
One of the world's great centers of ancient
civilization and spectacular natural beauty. The sun-worshipping Incas are only one of the
highly developed cultures which thrived thousands of years before Europeans arrived. Stunning ruins can be visited--the adobe city of Chan Chan, the Lord of Sipan's Moche burial site, the enigmatic Nazca lines etched into the desert floor and of course the incomparable Machu Picchu, to name but a few. Interesting museums showcase artifacts, including beautiful jewelry, fascinating ceramics, paintings, funeral fards and medical practices.
Amazing natural history sites include the dramatic Colca Canyon, Ballestas Islands and the Amazon jungle, which makes up more than half the country. One of the world's driest deserts lies along the coast. The wildlife is remarkable--vicunas and guanaco, capybara, howler monkeys, and in the forests along the western edge of the Amazon basin live the highest diversity of bird species in the world! Cock-of-the-rock, condor, colorful macaws, harpy eagles.........
About half of Peru's inhabitants are of pure Indian origin, many still speaking the language of their ancestors; their customs and beliefs are a combination of traditional Andean and imposed conquistadores practices. The towns and cities are vibrant, from Lima to colonial Cusco, filled with Peruvians working, shopping and enjoying life. Hotels of all levels provide comfortable accommodations; conservation-oriented award-winning lodges in the countryside offer unique stays. The food throughout the country is delicious, prepared according to the region--corn and potatoes (over 200 varieties!), fresh fish and grilled meat and the famous Pisco Sour!
Whatever your special interest, Peru has an abundance of experiences just waiting for you.
