First officially discovered in 1535, the islands have had a rich and varied history, filled with fur seal hunters, buccaneers, fishermen, whalers, scientists and, recently, curious and adventurous travelers. The indigenous wildlife is fascinating, accessible and often amusing—witness the courtship rituals of the comical blue-footed boobies. Flora and fauna have adapted to unusual conditions and are a living study of evolutionary science. The islands are so isolated there are few natural predators and animals have little fear of humans, allowing you to get unbelievably close to them. The giant Galapagos tortoises, Darwin’s finches, albatross, marine iguanas, Galapagos penguins and throngs of sea lions are readily seen and present great photo opportunities!
